You could have the best content in your industry and a beautifully designed website, but if the technical foundation is broken, Google won’t rank it. Technical SEO is the often-invisible work that ensures search engine crawlers can efficiently find, access, and index every important page on your site.
It’s also where small business websites accumulate the most unaddressed problems – often for years, without anyone realising. A site can look and function perfectly in a browser while quietly failing Google’s crawlers in the background.
I’m Cheryl Logan Baird, an independent SEO consultant based in Johannesburg, working with small and medium-sized businesses. Technical SEO audits are one of my core service areas, and they’re frequently the starting point for every client engagement.
Technical SEO refers to the optimisation of a website’s infrastructure rather than its content. It covers everything from how quickly your pages load, to how your site’s URLs are structured, to whether Google’s crawl budget is being spent on pages that should never be indexed in the first place.
When technical issues are present, they act as a ceiling on everything else you do. Content improvements, link building, and on-page work all have limited impact on a technically broken site. Getting the technical foundation right is almost always the highest-priority starting point – and the one that unlocks the most value from all subsequent work.
Google can only rank pages it can find and index. I audit your robots.txt file, XML sitemap, internal link structure, and URL configurations to ensure Googlebot can efficiently reach every page that should be visible – and is correctly blocked from pages that shouldn’t be, such as thank-you pages, admin areas, login pages and duplicate content.
I use Screaming Frog SEO Spider for comprehensive site crawls, cross-referenced with data from Google Search Console to identify gaps between what’s crawled, what’s indexed, and what’s actually ranking.
Google uses page speed and Core Web Vitals as direct ranking signals, particularly on mobile. The three Core Web Vitals – Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) – measure how quickly your page loads, how stable its layout is during loading, and how responsive it feels to user input.
Slow pages also directly cost you visitors. Around 53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds to load – so a site loading in five seconds is potentially losing more than half its visitors before they ever see what you offer. I audit performance using Google PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix, identify the specific issues causing delays – unoptimised images, render-blocking resources, excessive plugins, poor server response times – and either fix them directly or provide clear briefs for your developer.
Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If your pages don’t render correctly on smaller screens, or if tap targets are too small and text requires zooming to read, this directly affects your rankings. I test across device types and flag any responsiveness issues that need attention.
Google gives preference to sites served over HTTPS. If your site is still on HTTP, or if you have mixed content issues – HTTP elements loading within an HTTPS page – these need to be resolved. I verify your SSL configuration and identify any security-related signals that may be affecting your search visibility.
Duplicate content – whether from URL parameters, www versus non-www variants, HTTP versus HTTPS inconsistencies, or pages accessible at multiple addresses – confuses Google about which version to rank, splitting authority and weakening all versions. I identify all sources of duplication and implement canonical tags or 301 redirects to consolidate authority to the correct URL.
A logical site architecture ensures Google understands the relationship between your pages and can allocate crawl budget efficiently. I review your URL structure, page hierarchy, and internal linking patterns to ensure important pages are within a few clicks of the homepage and are supported by meaningful contextual links.
Broken internal and external links, unnecessary redirect chains (where a URL redirects to another redirect before reaching its final destination), and 404 error pages all waste crawl budget and create a poor user experience. I identify and resolve these systematically, prioritising by the volume of internal links pointing to affected pages.
Structured data – using Schema.org markup – helps Google understand the context of your content and can qualify your pages for enhanced search results: rich snippets, FAQ entries, review stars, local business information, and more. I implement the schema types relevant to your business, whether that’s LocalBusiness schema, Service schema, FAQ schema, or others appropriate to your content.
Your XML sitemap should be an accurate, current map of every page Google should index. I audit sitemaps for common issues: pages that are included but should be excluded (such as pagination, thin content, redirect destinations, or noindexed pages), missing canonical URLs, and incorrect lastmod dates that mislead Googlebot about when content was last updated.
WordPress powers a huge share of the web because it’s flexible and easy to build on, but that same flexibility is where the technical problems accumulate. Most WordPress sites carry the same handful of issues, and because they build up quietly over years, the owner rarely knows they’re there. Because I work almost entirely on WordPress, I know where to look.
Plugin bloat. Every plugin adds code, and much of it loads on every page whether it’s needed there or not. I audit what’s installed, remove what’s redundant, replace heavy plugins with lighter alternatives, and, where suitable, swap a plugin’s single function for a lightweight code snippet instead. This cuts the weight that slows your site and reduces your security exposure.
Caching. Correctly configured page caching is one of the biggest speed gains available on WordPress, and one of the most commonly misconfigured. I set your caching up properly so most visitors are served a fast, pre-built version of each page, rather than waiting for WordPress to assemble it from scratch on every visit.
Server response time. How quickly your server answers the first request is largely determined by your hosting, but it isn’t out of your hands. I reduce it through proper caching, a content delivery network (CDN), and making sure your site runs a current version of PHP. Where the hosting itself is the bottleneck, I’ll tell you and recommend a better plan or host, rather than papering over it.
Page-builder and theme weight. Page builders and heavy themes load far more CSS and JavaScript than most pages actually use, which drags down your Core Web Vitals. I identify what’s loading unnecessarily and strip it back, stopping unused scripts and styles from loading, and adding targeted code only where it earns its place – so your pages carry less weight and load faster.
Where you have a capable web developer, I’ll do this work alongside them. Where you don’t, I can handle the large majority of it directly with Administrator access, or I’ll tell you when a specialist developer is needed.
